International Women's Day Spotlight: Ruth Gonzalez

Valdés Math Celebrates Women's History Month! On International Women's day we want to highlight the work of an incredible Mathematician: Ruth Gonzalez.

Ruth Gonzalez, a trailblazer in the world of mathematics, embodies resilience, passion, and the spirit of breaking barriers! Born in Houston to Mexican parents, Ruth's journey in the field of math began in elementary school and soared to new heights.

In 1976, Ruth earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics at the University of Texas, laying the foundation for an illustrious career. From 1976 to 1980, she conducted research at the Applied Research Laboratories at the University of Texas, earning her master's degree in mathematics.

In 1980, Ruth joined the Exxon Production Research Company as a geophysical mathematician, showcasing her expertise and commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge. Undeterred, she continued her graduate work at Rice University, culminating in a Ph.D. in applied mathematics in 1986. Ruth Gonzalez made history by becoming the FIRST U.S.-born Hispanic woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics! Her achievements resonate not only as a personal triumph but also as a milestone for diversity and inclusion in STEM. Throughout her extensive career, Ruth was at the forefront of developing seismic imaging tools, contributing significantly to the field. Her passion extended beyond her work, as she actively encouraged and inspired minority girls and women to pursue careers in math and science.
