The José Valdés Math Foundation Commitment to Social Justice in Public Education
From the Foundation Executive Director, Robert Escobar
At Valdés we believe that education is a right to be enjoyed by any resident of America. Having a first-class education is the path to enjoying an enriched quality of life. Education must be provided in an equitable manner in order for all Americans to have opportunity. At Valdés, we advocate and promote equal access to public education and support the right to enable every member of society to pursue their educational achievements.
Valdés recognizes that access to education is not administered on an equitable basis and with that in mind we seek social justice for all in education. This is the driving force behind the Mission Statement of Valdés Math: To contribute to the development of the whole student by advancing their math skills and enabling them to flourish in a diverse community.
Public education is a cornerstone to building strong communities. Public schools in low-income neighborhoods are typically underfunded and are not able to meet the needs of the underserved population in which they exist. To have a vibrant and thriving community, public education must also be flourishing and prosperous.
In order to fulfill the objectives of total Social Justice in Education, partnerships between families, school districts, local and regional government and educational professionals must exist and be functional to meet the critical need for student success. While we are a modest service organization, we play a vital role in achieving equity in our local educational system. Join us and help Valdés Math be a viable partner with your local public education systems to help meet their obligation to provide equitable educational programs for every student, especially those who are from low-income communities and have been typically underserved and underrepresented.
