[COVID-19] Update

This message goes out to all of our community with good wishes and hope that we get past these challenging times. Like many other organizations, we are trying to adjust and plan for the future, both near and far.

These uncertain times call for reflection, which Valdes Math is undertaking with careful consideration to serve our community in the safest way possible. We have been and will continue to be relevant in our community and with that in mind we have modified our mission statement to more clearly define our roles. The mission of Valdés Math is to contribute to the development of the whole student by advancing their math skills and enabling them to flourish in a diverse community.  It is with the genuine effort that we work diligently to insure as much as possible that our students realize their full capacity.

Please know that we are still moving forward with our regularly-scheduled Summer Math Program.  However, in response to the on-going medical crisis, we are currently pursuing alternative instructional options as part of our overall contingency plans.

We have selected two new sites that we believe embrace the heart and warmth of our summer program. As most of you who have been with us in the past, you have experienced that our classes are administered with loving care and with the guidance that gives our students, your children, the best opportunity to succeed. Our two new sites foster a philosophy that is inclusive and welcoming and exemplifies the heart of Valdes.

Assuming we are able, as a country, to get past the crisis in time to conduct our summer program, our summer students will flourish in classrooms hosted by Alum Rock Union Elementary School District and the The Foundation for Hispanic Education.  Both organizations have elected to join with Valdes to support our students within the community in which they live and serve.

All of us, however, while hopeful, are not clear as to whether we will have our traditional summer program due to the terrible impact that the Corona virus is inflicting upon us. With that in mind, Valdes staff and Board have been working nonstop to construct a viable alternative to our traditional summer program. We have some details to attend to within the next week or two that precludes us from providing details at this time.

Our first step is to gain clarity from decision makers at the Federal, State and Local levels about what to anticipate for summer learning. If we are required to conduct distance learning, Valdes is in the process of creating the structure to enable that to take place. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and therefore we want to ask for your patience for a few weeks to see how best to proceed.

Despite the gloom, there is hope and Valdes intends to deliver on its mission.
